Dis·cover the news

We inspected 139,561 news articles from 12 online publications.

We found that 4.9% of news articles were altered after publication.

We discovered that changes were not disclosed in 46.2% of the articles.

Did you know that dozens of news articles are silently edited, updated or redacted everyday, with no mention to the original version or to what changed? In printed press corrections were included in the next edition of the publication. The goal of Revisionista.pt is to answer the following questions:

Which news articles were changededited?

What information was added or removed?

Are these edits acknowledged in the article text?

What are the edit patterns across newsrooms?

As the news media shifted away from print to almost exclusively online publishing, journalists are now pressured to publish at higher rates, with no time left for diligent revision. While the majority of edits are part of the news reporting process (e.g., correcting typos or adding fresh information), more significant changes should be communicated to the reader clearly. Our goal is to make the news cycle more transparent to the reader and to alert newsrooms for the need to preserve this information.
